Double Hang Closet Heights: 42 and 84 Inches

Double hang closet rod height covers two rods in the same vertical space, and Hunker places them at 42 and 84 inches above the floor.
Note the words Hunker uses for what you get: two short hangs, one above the other. Its short hang is for shirts or blouses, so dresses and coats go in a long hang instead, with the rod at 68 inches. For the shelf above, Hunker and ClosetMaid give two different figures, 84 and 85.5, and only one of them is an installation instruction.
- 84 inUpper rod, Hunker
- 42 inLower rod, Hunker
- 85.5 inUpper shelf in ClosetMaid’s own installation step
- Both shortShirts and blouses on each. Coats go elsewhere
ClosetMaid raises a ceiling limit itself, and note that what it says is about a shelf: “Obviously, low ceilings will affect whether or not a shelf can be placed at 84 inches.”
Since Hunker puts the upper rod of a double hang at that same 84 inches, my own reading is that the limit bears on both. That reading is mine, not either source’s. Measure floor to ceiling before you plan one, and if the number does not allow 84, this layout is not the one for that closet.

Double hang closet rod height, drawn to scale
42 and 84
Two rods in one vertical space, each giving a short hang. The upper one is the figure your ceiling has to allow, and the shelf that usually goes with it sits a little higher again: 84 inches on Hunker’s reading, 85.5 in ClosetMaid’s own installation step for its product.
What the two sources actually say
Hunker
The two rods, and what they give you
“In a double-hang configuration, one rod is positioned at the height of 42 inches, and another rod is positioned above it at 84 inches above the floor; this configuration provides two short-hang spaces, one above the other.”
ClosetMaid
The shelves, as an installation step
“Place one Superslide® shelf at 85.5 high and another below it at 42 for correct Double Hang heights.”
Both
What goes on them
Hunker’s short hang is “suitable for hanging shirts or blouses.” Both levels of a double hang are short hangs, so dresses and coats go in a long hang instead, where Hunker puts the rod at 68 inches.

Which systems double hang
Two rods need two fixings at two heights. Closet systems sets out how each family fixes them, and reach-in closet systems narrows it to a shallow closet.
If the closet is under four feet wide, narrow closet layout applies this pair to a real closet, including the one rule that covers the whole double-row section.
