Standard Closet Shelf Height: What Each Source Publishes

Standard closet shelf height has three figures that come up again and again, and they are not the same kind of claim.
84 inches is the figure Hunker states for the upper shelf and ClosetMaid calls typical. 85.5 inches is what that same manufacturer tells installers to fit. 42 inches is the lower shelf of a double hang. The difference between a typical figure and an installation step is the thing to settle before you mark the wall, and so is your ceiling.
- 84 inHigh shelf. Hunker states it, ClosetMaid calls it typical
- 85.5 inHigh shelf, in ClosetMaid’s own installation step
- 70 / 71.5 inLong hang shelf. Typical, then the installation step
- 42 inThe lower shelf of a double hang
ClosetMaid raises this limit itself, in its own words: “Obviously, low ceilings will affect whether or not a shelf can be placed at 84 inches.”
Measure floor to ceiling before you commit to one. If the number does not allow 84, no amount of choosing between the figures on this page changes that, and the shelf has to come down to whatever your ceiling actually gives you.

Two sets of standard closet shelf height, from one brand
84 or 85.5
ClosetMaid publishes both on one page, and they are an inch and a half apart. One set it calls typical, the other is what it tells you to do when you are fitting its own system. The page does not explain the gap. My own reading: follow the installation figures when you are fitting that brand’s system, and the typical figures when you are not.
What each source actually says
Hunker
The high shelf, and the rod beside it
“The upper shelf in a closet is set at 84 inches above the floor, the same height as the upper rod in a double-hang configuration.”
ClosetMaid
The installation steps
“Install one shelf at 85.5 that runs the entire perimeter of your closet to maximize upper storage,” and “For Long Hang, place the shelf at 71.5.”
ClosetMaid
The measuring section
“Typical shelf heights are 70 from the floor for long hanging space and 84 and 42 from the floor for double or short hanging space.” I found no explanation of the gap between the two sets on that page.

The figures next to this onethe depth, the rod, and what holds the board up
The height is one of three figures to settle before you buy. The other two are how deep the shelf should be, which covers the board itself, and how high the rod goes, which is not the same measurement as the shelf. All of them sit together on reach-in closet dimensions, with the depth and width included, and how to measure a closet covers taking your own numbers first.
For the two rods in one vertical space, and the 42 inch figure in context, see double hang closet heights.
Which systems hold a shelf at this height
Wire brackets, melamine pegs and wood cleats each fix a shelf differently. The four families are set out in closet systems, and the cheaper grades in affordable closet systems.
Questions people ask3 questions
What is the standard height for a closet shelf?
84 inches from the floor is the figure Hunker states and ClosetMaid calls typical. ClosetMaid’s own installation step for its product is 85.5 inches.
How high should a closet shelf be for a long hang?
ClosetMaid gives 70 inches as typical and 71.5 inches in its Long Hang installation step.
Is the shelf the same height as the rod?
In a double hang, Hunker says yes: “The upper shelf in a closet is set at 84 inches above the floor, the same height as the upper rod in a double-hang configuration.” On a long hang the two figures come from different sources, and this comparison is my own: Hunker puts the rod at 68 inches, ClosetMaid the shelf at 70 or 71.5.
