Closet Rod Height: The Heights Hunker Publishes, One Per Garment Length

Closet rod height in practice: a single closet rail of shirts and blouses on matching hangers, with a shelf above

Closet rod height is not one figure. Hunker publishes three, one per garment length, and each comes with what it is for.

A long hang at 68 inches for dresses and coats, a mid hang at 50 so pants hang without being folded over a hanger, and a short hang at 42 for shirts or blouses. A double hang is a fourth case with its own constraints, and it has its own page. One thing to settle before you drill: a rod height and a shelf height are two different measurements, and guides publish both.

  • 42 inShort hang. Shirts or blouses
  • 84 inThe upper rod of a double hang, on its own page
Check which figure you are reading before you drill

A closet rod height and a closet shelf height are two separate measurements, and guides publish both. In a double hang they coincide: Hunker says “The upper shelf in a closet is set at 84 inches above the floor, the same height as the upper rod in a double-hang configuration.”

On a long hang they separate, and this comparison across two sources is my own. Hunker puts the rod at 68 inches. ClosetMaid gives 70 inches as typical and 71.5 inches in its Long Hang installation step, which are two different kinds of figure. If your guide does not say which of the two it is giving you, that is the question to settle before the drill comes out.

What a closet rod height actually buys you

Clear space under the rod

68 / 50 / 42

The height you fix the rod at is the clear space you get underneath it, and that space has to be longer than your longest garment on its hanger. That is the whole reason Hunker publishes three figures rather than one: a dress and a shirt are not asking for the same thing.

What a closet rod height actually buys you: the clear space underneath, 68, 50 or 42 inches Three closet sections side by side at the same scale, sharing one floor line. In each, a rod is drawn at the height Hunker publishes and an orange arrow runs from the rod down to the floor. The long hang rod sits at 68 inches, giving 68 inches of clear space below it for dresses and coats. The mid hang rod sits at 50 inches, for pants hung without folding them over a hanger. The short hang rod sits at 42 inches, for shirts or blouses. 68 in 50 in 42 in Long hang Mid hang Short hang dresses and coats pants, not folded shirts or blouses The rod height is the clear space underneath it. That space has to be longer than your longest garment on its hanger.

The three, in Hunker’s words

68 in

Long hang

The long-hang rod “allows enough vertical space for longer items, such as dresses and coats; it is usually placed 68 inches above the floor.”

50 in

Mid hang

The mid-hang rod “is positioned to allow pants to be hung without folding them over a hanger; it is typically placed 50 inches above the floor.”

42 in

Short hang

The short-hang rod “is suitable for hanging shirts or blouses, and it is typically positioned 42 inches above the closet floor.”

Next to the rod there is usually a shelf, and it is a separate figure: see standard closet shelf height for how high it goes, and closet shelf depth for how deep the board needs to be. For two rods in one vertical space, double hang closet heights has the pair and the ceiling check.

All of it together, with the depth and width that decide what fits at all, is on reach-in closet dimensions. To take your own numbers first, see how to measure a closet.
